Pueblo scrap metal yard will face changes after two fires

Changes are going to happen at a scrap metal recycle yard in Pueblo that’s already had two fires this year.

In April and June, American Iron and Metal had fires on a pile of vehicle scraps. There was so much smoke going into neighborhoods in the area, the health department had to issue health advisories.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office, Environmental Protection Agency and firefighters said the yard won’t face any charges or fines.

They said the pile must be cleared and suggested a water system be put in at the facility just in case of future fires. They also said the yard is cooperating with the agencies.

The EPA is also monitoring the air in the area.

Anthony Razo lives near the scrap yard. He said he is still feeling the after effects of the fire.

“I have a lot of headaches, they come and go. I’m doing something, and all of a sudden, I get a sharp pain. I didn’t use get them that much until after the fire,” he said.

Firefighters said the causes of the fires are undetermined.
