1 killed, 3 seriously injured in Teller County crash

One person is dead and three others are seriously hurt after a two-car crash in Teller County Monday night.

The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Hwy 67 and Teller CR 81, near Cripple Creek.

The Colorado State Patrol says a car tried to negotiate a curve when the driver hit an icy roadway and lost control. The car ended up on the wrong side of the road, into the path of a second oncoming car. The second car crashed into the first car, sending it down an embankment.

The driver of the first car, 38-year-old Shangbao Tang of Colorado Springs, suffered minor injuries. Troopers say he was wearing his seat belt. A passenger in the car, 38-year-old Quanling Guan of Colorado Springs, was also wearing her seat belt, but suffered serious injuries. A third passenger who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, a 30-year-old man from Colorado Springs, was killed in the crash. Troopers are not releasing his name until his family has been notified.

The driver and passenger in the second car, 64-year-old David Tafoya and 68-year-old Lillian Tafoya of Colorado Springs, suffered serious injuries. Troopers say both were wearing seat belts.

Troopers are investigating alcohol and/or drug use as possible factors in the crash.
