Clerk, customers detain would-be robber

Police say a man who stole money from a cash register at a Colorado Springs King Soopers didn’t make it out of the store thanks to quick thinking customers.

The attempted robbery happened at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at the King Soopers at 3250 Centennial Boulevard.

Police say Joseph Grimmig, 27, waited for a clerk to open the cash register, then made his move. Grimmig allegedly shoved the clerk aside, grabbed money from the register, and tried to run out of the store.

Police say the clerk and some customers chased Grimmig. They wrestled him to the floor and held him down until police arrived.

All of the stolen money was returned to the store, and Grimmig was taken to jail on a robbery charge.
