Frontier Elementary returns to school after closing due to Covid-19 symptoms

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Students at Frontier Elementary made their return to school Monday after being shut down for the last three days. The decision to close was made after some staff and students displayed COVID-Like symptoms throughout the week, resulting in isolations and quarantines.

However, one class must remain in quarantine as they continue to await one final COVID-19 test result.

Allison Cortez, Chief Communications Officer for District 20, said, “They were symptomatic; we haven’t got a negative or a positive, still waiting on those results. Once we get them, then we will know the best path forward for that class.”

As for the closure itself, District 20 says the way everything was handled, was done correctly.

“The first week of school even with the isolations, the quarantines, the temporary closure it was successful. The reason it was successful was we were prepared and followed the guidelines to a tee. Actually went really smoothly,” said Cortez.

But knowing what they know now and how this closure went, is there anything they would change moving forward?

Cortez said, “Every time we learn and grow when we do these. We are getting better, we are developing communication templates every time and I think we are getting better and quickest at it. So far we have not had many roadblocks or hiccups that would make us change how we are doing things. Just really refining that process and making it more speedy.”

Cortez says that District 20 continues to ask both staff and students to conduct a daily symptom check before coming to school.

“Even if it’s just a headache, we would rather you stay home, get well and we will make sure you don’t fall behind in your class. And if you are a staff member and you get that day off, it’s all good. We just need you to stay home if you are sick.”
