Human remains found near Spruce Trail in Manitou Springs

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Human remains were found inside a bag near Spruce Trail in Manitou Springs, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, sheriff's office says two people walked into the Manitou Springs Police Department with a bag of a partial human skull and other bone fragments.

The two people were hiking near Spruce Trail in Manitou Springs when they found the human remains.

The Manitou Springs Police Department called their investigations division and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office to assist in the investigation.

The next day, detectives from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the El Paso County Search and Rescue conducted a search in the area. Two cadaver dog teams assisted in the search.

On Tuesday, May 31, an autopsy with conducted on the partial skull, surgical hardware, and bone fragments.

The coroner's office will determine the cause of death.

The investigation remains ongoing.

  1. Why do people who find things like this carry it off and then take it to the police? They may have disturbed important forensic evidence at the place where they found it.
