COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Businesses across El Paso County have undeniably taken a hit during the pandemic, but new data from the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department shows some promise for our local economy.

Officials at the department said they got over 15,000 plans in 2020; that's 46% more than they received in 2019.

Those plans led to permits for high profile projects like the Amazon Distribution Center, the Switchbacks Soccer Stadium, and the Aerospace expansion.

The department issued 392 permits for commercial projects in 2020 alone.

The most notable increase was in permits for single-family homes. Over 5,000 permits were approved in 200; 27% more than in 2019.

“A lot of these products are providing jobs," said Greg Dingrando, Public Information Officer at the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. "Then people take the money from those jobs and spend it on other things. It really is a ripple effect."

Permits were also secured for 34 apartment buildings, six hotels, and permits to build new schools plus additions to existing school buildings.

Officials with the Department said people can expect to see even more construction during the first few months of 2021, as they received a large amount of plan submissions during the second half of 2020.
