Teller County tracking COVID-19 outbreaks linked to Andrew Wommack Ministries

Andrew Wommack Ministries Charis Bible College

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- An event at Andrew Wommack Ministries' campus in Teller County already resulted in one COVID-19 outbreak earlier this year, but now the local public health department says it's tracking other outbreaks related to events hosted by AWMI.

According to a release sent Monday by Teller County Public Health and Environment, officials will be reaching out directly "with all known close contacts of those who have tested positive." If you don't get a communication from public health, you likely weren't exposed to the affected person.

It's not clear if the county has determined that there was any transmission of COVID-19 at recent events hosted by Andrew Wommack Ministries at the organization's campus outside of Woodland Park. At this point, TCPHE is asking people who develop symptoms to get tested and stay away from other people.

This announcement comes weeks after a Bible conference was held at AWMI's center. That Bible conference was also the center of a legal battle between AWMI and state and local public health departments over a dispute regarding state guidelines restricting indoor capacities. The state had sent a cease and desist to AWMI to prevent large gatherings of more than 175 people, while AWMI insisted it was following all of the recommended COVID-19 guidelines.

A new lawsuit was filed by the Colorado Attorney General's Office against AWMI, and that litigation is still pending.

Teller County says it'll begin posting all local outbreak information at TellerCovid.com and the Teller County websites beginning the week of Nov. 1.
