PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- This year, there's no shortage of applications for election judge positions in both El Paso County and Pueblo County for the upcoming November 3rd election.

In El Paso County, more than 1,200 applied for 550 poll jobs this year. In Pueblo, 800 applicants are vying for 175 positions.

Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder, Gilbert Ortiz, says, "We’re getting way more than what we’re used to getting, probably a good 100% more applications."

Election judges, who are poll workers responsible for the proper and orderly voting at polling stations, are applying in droves, which Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder, Ortiz, says could be partly attributed to more people needing work amid the pandemic.

With additional voting centers and ballot drop boxes in the Pikes Peak Region, El Paso County has more than 435,000 registered voters. Pueblo County reaches 110,000 active registered voters.

Ortiz adds that Pueblo's voter registiration has continued to climb over the years, from 60,000 voters back in 2007. He clarifies, "I think mail-ballots have really changed that, and online voter registration and all the things we’ve put in place since 2007 to make voting easier in Colorado."

Mail-in ballots go out Friday, October 9th. Since clerks are expecting a big rush on election day, it's encouraged to get ballots out early.
