Colorado Springs asks for public input on transportation, traffic issues

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — If you have traffic frustrations getting around Colorado Springs, a city transportation survey could be a meaningful way for you to share your opinion with city leaders.

The city’s last transportation plan was created in 2001. Colorado Springs has grown considerably since then, especially to the north and east.

As Colorado Springs leaders plan for the next 20 years of new infrastructure and improvements, they’re asking for the public to weigh in through an online survey and interactive map.

The survey asks questions like where you live and work and how you get around.

“Safety is a priority for us," Todd Frisbee, traffic engineer for Colorado Springs, said. "We want to move people around the city safely, by whatever mode they decide.”

Lora Zimpher was a Lyft driver in the Springs for a year. She's been to every corner of town.

"There’s definitely quite a few potholes, I can tell you that," Zimpher said. "I feel like we’re outgrowing the width of the city a little bit."

Alan Dubsk has lived in Colorado Springs for more than a decade. He remembers when the northeast part of town near Powers and Dublin didn't have all the restaurants and shops it does now.

"It’s great to see our city booming, but we have to keep up with the infrastructure," Dubsk said. "Otherwise no one’s going to be able to travel these roads."

Dubsk agrees with Zimpher that there's a pothole problem.

"I’ve destroyed three tires in a month, and I’m out of pocket for that," he said.

The city is also looking for input from pedestrians, bikers, and people who use public transit. Colorado Springs' next transportation plan is set to be released in late 2021.
