DOC inmate from Sterling dies at hospital with symptoms of COVID-19
STERLING, Colo. (KRDO) -- An inmate who resided at a Colorado prison with 138 confirmed cases of COVID-19 has died after experiencing symptoms of the virus. That's according to Annie Skinner with the Colorado Department of Corrections.
Skinner said in release Friday that the 86-year-old inmate was being held at Sterling Correctional Facility where over 200 inmates have displayed symptoms. The inmate was taken to a hospital and later died.
The inmate was tested for COVID-19 while at the hospital, said Skinner, but KRDO is awaiting confirmation if he tested positive or negative.
The official cause of death and the inmate's name will be released at a later time from the coroner's office, said the release.
The inmate was being held in a quarantine unit prior to being taken to the hospital. The other inmates in that area will continue to be monitored. The facility will continue to be cleaned multiple times a day and all staff and inmates are required to wear face coverings in the facility at all times, according to the DOC.
