Police find missing hikers shot dead near Santa Fe Trail

Lee and Stella Vigil, found dead along Monument Creek early Saturday morning.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs Police discovered the bodies of two missing elderly adults near a trail off of Woodman Road in Colorado Springs early Saturday morning. The hikers had apparently been shot.

On Friday night around 8:30 p.m. Colorado Springs Police received a phone call about potential missing 'at-risk' adults in their 70's, Lee and Stella Vigil, who allegedly went hiking near the Edmundson trailhead, off East Woodmen Road.

Family members and CSPD officers arrived at the trailhead and found the car that belonged to the missing hikers and the El Paso County Search and Rescue joined the search.

Around 12:30 a.m. they found the bodies of the hikers near Monument Creek, just off of the Santa Fe Trail.

KRDO crews talked to couples and families along the trail Saturday who were surprised and horrified by the news.

"I don't want my wife to come here alone. She always has to come with me from now on, if we come back," Morty Zand said.

"Up until today I usually feel pretty good. You have to be a little careful, sometimes there are some sketchy people," said Michael Hollenbeck who recognized the couple. "It's sad, it's upsetting, I think I've seen them on the trail before."

Detectives from the Violent Crimes Homicide/Assault Unit are currently investigating the two deaths. If you have any information you think could help, you're asked to call CSPD.
