BREAKING: High-speed chase closes S. Academy, Fountain Police officer seriously injured

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- An entire section of South Academy Boulevard became a major crime scene Thursday night after a high-speed chase and foot pursuit ended with a Fountain Police Officer critically injured.

South Academy Boulevard closed between I-25 and Drennan Road, as well as both directions of Highway 85/87 from S. Academy around 8 p.m.

Officers with several agencies were pursuing a suspect who had "committed multiple felonies," according to Fountain Police.

According to FPD, the pursuit began along I-25 in the Fountain area.

The chase ended when the suspect's vehicle was disabled by tire spikes. Fountain Police told KRDO that three suspects bailed out of the car, running away.

While trying to catch the suspects, a Fountain Police Officer fell roughly 30 feet off S. Academy crossing over Fountain Creek.

That officer, whose name has not been released, was transported via helicopter, which landed on S. Academy, St. Francis Hospital. A Fountain Police spokesperson said the officer was in critical condition Thursday night.
