Flight delays continue at Denver airport to close out the holiday weekend

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO)-- It's been a holiday weekend filled with travel nightmares, and Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Denver International Airport is no exception. In fact, it's the second-worst place to travel through in the entire country, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware.

As of 8:30 P.M., 32% of the flights out of DEN have been delayed, and 25% of the flights landing in Denver have too.

It doesn't stop there though.

In fact, at one point on Tuesday, the passenger train that takes people between the security checkpoint and different concourses stopped moving, with some passengers stuck on the train.

The delays and cancellations have been happening all weekend, and many of them are being blamed on a pilot and staffing shortage with the airlines.

"I had to get a rental car. We had to cut our vacation short a day," said Jaimi Wallis who had her flight canceled and had to drive back to Colorado Springs from Las Vegas. "Tried to get a few hours of sleep and got on the road to make it back in time for work."

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says the airlines are the ones dropping the ball, claiming that they need to use the tax funding they've been given to prepare for holiday weekends like the Fourth of July.

"It's definitely true that a lot of passengers are wondering why we sent this level of taxpayer funding for the airline industry only to see them seem not to be prepared at a moment like this," Buttigieg continued. "We imposed a record level of fines with the enforcement powers of my department on airlines that were failing to deliver their refunds that are required for passengers whose flights are canceled. That's something we did earlier, and we're looking at more steps and more tools that we have."
