More than 200 Volunteers remodel Home for At-Risk Veterans and families

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., (KRDO) - More than 200 volunteers revamped a house for formerly homeless veterans and their families today.

The Home Depot Foundation, Volunteers of America, and Spark the Change Colorado came together Wednesday to give veterans and families who live at Freedom Springs Apartments a more comfortable space.

The volunteers helped by installing new raised beds, planting a garden, building a dog park, and other general landscaping needs, renovating the home of 50 at-risk veterans and their families at freedom springs apartments.

Joe Wimberley with The Home Depot Foundation says the heart of people who give back is inspiring.

"We have about 200 people coming in, honestly from all across the U.S. when they hear about a project like this for veterans, they just want to come out here and serve," said Wimberley.

The foundation's goal was to finish this project within four hours- though a challenge, with a village-like this they were able to accomplish a lot.

"Over these four hours we built hundreds of pieces of furniture all to help meet the need of veterans," added Wimberley.

Freedom Springs currently houses 50 at-risk veterans and their families. The facility aims to provide wrap-around services for those who live there. A veteran and now volunteer for the foundation, Chris Foster says this hits home for him.

"It is important to me personally, I spent a lot of time in the middle east serving as a government contractor as well as in the military, and having the opportunity to help out people who are in need is extremely important," said Foster.

Over the past 10 years, the home depot foundation has helped renovate and enhance more than 50,000 veteran homes and facilities, to ensure they have a safe and comfortable place to call home.
