Some Colorado parents turning to each other for help during baby formula shortage

Parents turn to each other for help during Formula shortage

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Despite a 78,000-pound baby formula shipment arriving in the U.S. this week, parents are still concerned. Now, some Southern Colorado parents are turning to social media to find alternatives on how to feed their babies.

Many say they fear if they don't take those steps in keeping their children healthy, their next trip might be to a hospital.

Brittany Warnock a mother of four, including a seven-month-old baby, has been donating her breast milk to mothers who desperately need it during this shortage.

"I donate about 100 to 140 ounces of milk a month," said Warnock.

Warnock is  a part of a private Facebook group called  'Colorado Baby Mamas'

"They feel devastated that they can't find milk or just feel devastated that there are no other options," said Warnock.

Warnock is choosing to donate and not charge because she says getting milk from the Milk Bank could get expensive.

However, this goes against what experts are telling parents to do.

Experts do not recommend using breast milk from other mothers, saying breast milk from another woman could potentially be contaminated.

They say there's also the chance that parents with the best of intentions could accidentally expose their babies to harmful medications or drugs.

Rocky Mountain Milk Bank Chapter Director Rebecca Heinrich says while it's generous for mothers to donate, it is important to take cautious steps.

"Checking with your pediatrician is the safest option, always confirming your nutritious form with your pediatrician is your safest way to go," said Heinrich.

Theresa Hennings, a mother of a nine-month-old, says the last few months have been tough. She tells KRDO she's hopeful the formula supply comes back soon.

On Wednesday, baby formula makers are expected to testify before congress about the shortage.

Experts recommend you speak with your child's pediatrician before doing so before resorting to an informal breast milk swap.
