Springs Rescue Mission Holiday Banquet returns

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., (KRDO)- Every year the Springs Rescue Mission hosts its annual holiday banquet to feed hundreds of homeless people, and that tradition continued Wednesday.

Leaders at the 25-year-old Springs Rescue Mission say Wednesday's meal is extra special because the banquet was hosted in the mission's fully constructed campus, something that was in the works a year ago.

Charles Jackson --who became homeless and unemployed in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic-- is very thankful for the meal.

"It's been super tough, waking up in a shelter, you know, you don't get to wake up next to your loved ones, I barely get to wake up next to my dog," Jackson said.

Within the last year, Jackson lost both his legs due to his degenerative bone disease. But going into the new year, he is grateful for a new pair of prosthetic legs he got just nine weeks ago.

"Yeah, so I am walking around and doing what I got to do," added Jackson.

Springs Rescue Mission is aiming to bring joy to this holiday season with meals and shelter for Jackson and hundreds of others.

"I do believe many volunteers have brought even stockings for our guests when they wake up, we anticipate having 375 to 450 people stay the night at the rescue mission on Christmas Eve, they are going to wake up to a Christmas celebration," said Travis Williams with the Springs Rescue Mission.

According to the Springs Rescue Mission, their work has been helping get twenty homeless people off the streets every month, helping them get back into the community.

For Charles Jackson, he hopes to be one of them going into the new year as he looks forward to one thing we all may take for granted.

"Home … like not back to Minnesota, but home home, getting back my own place and being able to live," added Jackson.

The holiday banquet continues on Christmas Eve, Christmas morning, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. Even on a normal day, the Springs Rescue Mission typically serves about 700 people a day.
