Suds for Kids: Donation-based carwash raises money for Children’s Hospital of Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A local group is keeping its new tradition of giving back to Children's Hospital with a donation-based car wash on Friday.

The Colorado Springs CPA and accounting firm, WCG Inc., held the Suds for Kids car wash with all proceeds going directly to the Children's Hospital of Colorado.

The hospital has a special place in the heart of one of WCG's employees, Roberta Bertrand, whose son Jayden received treatment for high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the Children's Hospital of Colorado around eight years ago. He was just 10 years old when he was diagnosed.

“I remember a year after his diagnosis, driving down the road and thinking, ‘Oh my god, my son has cancer,'" said Roberta. “They did a bone marrow biopsy, and found out that 95% of his bone marrow was cancer. It was just a hit in the gut. I never thought I’d be the parent of a child fighting cancer.”

Roberta said thanks to the research and care of the Children's Hospital, Jayden has been cancer-free for four years now. By year five, he'll officially be considered a survivor.

"I truly believe the [Children's Hospital] is the reason my son is still alive," said Roberta.

WCG has been hosting the donation-based carwash "Suds for Kids" for two years. In 2020, they raised $2,100. They matched every dollar, donating over $4,000 total to the Children's Hospital.

Roberta said she knows first hand that every penny counts for a child fighting the same battle her son did.

“He is my inspiration, he is my hero," said Roberta. "So many times I wanted to quit and he wouldn’t."

The carwash ran from noon to 3 p.m. at 2393 Flying Horse Club Dr.
