Pueblo Senior care community implement mandatory full-staff vaccination policy

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) - Sharmar Village Senior Care Community is now setting a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.

According to the facility, 100 percent of their staff received vaccinations during a federally funded clinic.

Executive Director of Sharmar Village Keith Jackson says it is their top priority for their staff to remain in good health.

“At Sharmar, we are dedicated to keeping our residents and staff healthy, our team truly understands the difficulties families are going through and we are here to help keep their loved ones safe and supported during this time."

In late January, Sharmar announced that it was establishing a condition of employment requiring all current and future staff members to receive the COVID-19 vaccine to protect residents. The staff who decline to get vaccinated without a legal qualifying reason were told they will not work any hours for the duration of the declared national emergency. Staff was given until the second scheduled clinic to determine participation in the program.

According to the facility, due to their vaccination mandatory program, Sharmar reported 100% of staff received vaccinations at the time of the Federally Funded Clinics in mid-February. A month later, in March, Jackson said that COVID-19 testing continued to return negative results, and declared Sharmar an outbreak-free senior care campus.

This comes following an outbreak in the fall.

In October of 2020, the Pueblo County Department of Health and Environment confirmed a COVID-19 outbreak at the Chateau at Sharmar Assisted Living facility.

According to Chateau's Community Relations Director, Lisa Sykes, 15 people tested positive for the virus, including four employees and 11 residents at the time.
