D60 unveils new K-8 school, replacing Heroes Academy

New K-8

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- After passing a $218 million bond in 2019, taxpayers in Pueblo were promised four new schools buildings. Last week, Pueblo School District 60 said a fifth new school will be built at no additional cost to those taxpayers.

A new K-8 school is set to be built on the 14- acre property of the recently demolished Heroes K-8 Academy.

Heroes K-8 Academy was shut down because of a crumbling infrastructure, and the maintenance cost was simply too high.

On Thursday, the District 60 board of education unanimously approved the allocation of bond-related funds toward the construction of the school, which would become the district’s second K-8 institution.

The D60 Board believes another K-8 school is favorable to the neighborhood, while the building will accommodate at least 650 students. The graduating students at the unnamed K-8 school would feed into Pueblo Centennial High School.

D60 says the funds for the fifth school stem from extra premiums secured through the bond sale, cost savings from favorable bids, and prudent construction management.
