El Paso County adds 3 new free testing sites for COVID-19

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The county's Public Health department is in its third week of offering three additional testing sites for COVID-19, bringing the total to four.

Falcon site

The new coronavirus testing sites are free to the public with no insurance or referrals required.

The new locations are at:

  • 6436 S. U.S. Highway 85-87 (near Applebee's) in Fountain; open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • 12072 Royal County Down Road in Falcon (behind Fire Station #1);
    open Tuesday and Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • 25 Jefferson Street (parking lot on the corner of Lincoln and Jefferson) in Monument; open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Falcon site was changed from its original location at the Rock Island Regional Trailhead to allow better access in case of snow, ice or other inclement weather.

The free testing site at the Citadel Mall remains available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

People should check the county health department's website in case of any weather-related closures.

"People may think these sites are brand new but they're not," said Lisa Powell, who oversees the testing sites for El Paso County Public Health. "They just may not have heard about them. We've doubled our testing capacity. We're seeing from 300 to 400 people at these sites every day."

People from as far away as Calhan in the county's northeastern corner, and southern Elbert County, visited the additional sites Tuesday.

However, Powell said that Citadel remains the busiest site, setting a record Monday with more than 2,200 people tested.

"That's more than at any time at (Denver's) Pepsi Center," she said. "But whether we've reached our peak yet, I don't know. It's going to depend on how the rest of this virus continues."

Traffic was steady at Citadel Tuesday, at times resulting in long lines.
