Census takers will start door knocking on August 11th

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — If you haven’t filled out your U.S. census form yet, you may get a knock on your door in a couple weeks. Census takers will begin knocking on doors August 11th to collect responses from households that have not yet responded.

You can fill out the census online at 2020Census.gov or by phone at 1-800-844-2020.

The census is used to make sure Colorado receives fair representation in Congress and its fair share of federal funding. The data collected is then used by states for redistricting, according to the state website.

“The Census is about so much more than a population count,” Governor Jared Polis said on the website. “It’s also about making sure our state gets the resources it needs to support our communities and plan for the future. Funding from the census can go toward new roads, new schools, new emergency services and economic opportunities.”

The federal government distributes about $880 billion in funding across the United States based on census counts. In Colorado, that shakes down to approximately $13 billion each year, or an estimated $2,300 per person, according to a study by George Washington University.
