COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Since the COVID-19 shutdown, airlines and airports have to look for ways to reach and reassure travelers, giving them the confidence to fly once again.

The Colorado Springs Airport has chosen a unique way to try and gain traction, by calling itself "Colorado's Small Airport" and highlighting the advantages of that.

Dana Schield with the COS Airport said, “Small does not mean anything negative. Small means big benefits for our passengers. We are comfortable, we are friendly, we are convenient. We offer small lines, small waits, small walks to the departure gates.”

While it’s always been obvious that COS is smaller than Denver International Airport, the advantages of flying from a small airport have only become clearer since the start of the pandemic, and the Colorado Springs Airport is taking full advantage of it.

“Social distancing is made much easier in a small airport and the navigation and the logistics of a small airport are also way easier and keep travelers safe,” Schield said.

The month of June still saw a downturn in numbers, but future projections are looking promising and hopefully starting to trend up.

“We have made a significant increase since the pandemic really began," Schield said. "We anticipate that increase to continue into summer and into the fall. And our projections for the fall show a large increase in seats as well as some extra flights.”

Even now with less traffic, the airport's number one priority is still the safety of travelers and employees. Earlier this month, they required face masks while inside their airport, a decision that was made even before Governor Polis’s statewide mandate.

“I think travelers were getting confused as to when they can do certain things and they can’t so we felt that this was just making the traveling experience much easier and straight forward," Schield said.

But COS is hoping the strategy works because the airport has seen about a 53% decrease in passenger count compared to this time last year.
