Father arrested after shooting of child in Yoder

YODER, Colo. (KRDO) -- The father of the child who was shot Tuesday evening in Yoder has been arrested on multiple felony charges, including child abuse, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

The EPCSO said Wednesday that Nikolay Krutitskiy, 34, was booked into jail after the shooting at the family's home on Edison Road.

According to authorities, the home is 12 miles from the Yoder Post Office where the boy's parent's brought him after the shooting.

"Yoder is significantly far and so based on my limited understanding, I believe it (bringing the boy to the post office) may have been to decrease the time it would take first responders to get him help," said Jackie Kirby, a spokesperson for the EPCSO.

It's not yet clear what led to the shooting, but the child was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Deputies went to the post office and were flagged down by Krutitskiy and another parent, the EPCSO said.

Krutitskiy is facing charges of first-degree assault, child abuse - serious injury, possession of a weapon by previous offender, child abuse - without injury, prohibited use of weapon, violation of a restraining order and reckless endangerment.

"Based on the charges, I don't believe that it would have been something accidental where the juvenile discharged the firearm and accidentally shot himself," Kirby said.

She said the child is in serious but stable condition in a local hospital as of Wednesday morning.

"We continue to do interviews," Kirby said.  "There are still key people in this scenario who have not been interviewed yet.  So that will continue, and then we will put the case together for the D.A.'s office."
