Crash in SE Colorado Springs kills teen following traffic stop

Colorado Springs police officers ended up finding a vehicle that fled from a traffic stop after it was involved in a fatal wreck minutes later on Wednesday morning.

Around 3:07 a.m. Wednesday, Colorado Springs police tried to stop a white SUV on Pikes Peak Ave near Ruskin Drive. When police turned on their lights, the vehicle took off speeding.

Two minutes later, CSPD got a call of a car that had rolled and crashed into someone’s yard. When police arrived to investigate they realized it was the same vehicle that they had tried to stop.

One person was found dead in the yard, and a family member of the victim told KRDO he was a 14-year-old. It’s not clear if he was driving or if he was a passenger in the SUV.

CSPD is investigating the crash as a hit-and-run because witnesses reported seeing someone flee the scene. Police also say that there are reports of this vehicle being stolen.

Pikes Peak Ave between Ruskin and Byron was closed for several hours.

It’s still very early in the investigation, and we will continue to keep you updated.
