Compensation fund set up for Colorado Catholic church abuse victims
People who were abused by Catholic priests in Colorado are now eligible to receive unlimited payouts under a compensation program funded by the church.
The program’s formation was announced in February and it began operating Monday. Its administrators said they were sending out packets to 65 people who previously reported abuse to the church asking them if they would like to submit a claim.
People who haven’t previously contacted the dioceses of Colorado Springs, Denver and Pueblo to report abuse have until Nov. 30 to contact the Colorado Independent Reconciliation and Reparations Program . Claims must be filed by Jan. 31.
The program is led by Kenneth Feinberg, who oversaw victims’ compensation for the 2012 Aurora theater shooting. He and a colleague will have the final say on how much victims receive.
