Police arrest suspect trying to burglarize business for fourth straight day in Colorado Springs
Once wasn’t enough, apparently, for a burglary suspect arrested by Colorado Springs police and accused of trying to break into the same business for four consecutive days.
Police said Jared Burns, 29, has an extensive history of prior burglaries.
Sgt. Bill Betts said that on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday — at around 6 a.m. — Burns broke into a company van outside Cheyenne Mountain Roofing, near the intersection of Platte Avenue and Wooten Road on the city’s east side.
An employee, Justus Whipkey, said on each occasion, tools and equipment were taken.
“They even took an air compressor,” he said. “The van is normally parked inside but was outside on those days.”
Betts said the company didn’t report the burglaries until after the third break-in on Wednesday.
“On Thursday, we decided to set up surveillance just to see if (Burns) would come back,” he said. “When he did, I was surprised. I’ve never seen a suspect return to the same place, at the same time, on four consecutive days.”
Roofing employees were inside their office watching the scenario on their surveillance cameras.
“He didn’t stop and get out that time,” Whipkey said. “He just drove around the building, then he left.”
Police said the vehicle matched an earlier description they were given. They pulled Burns over a short distance away and took him into custody without incident.
“We found property belonging to the victim and property that may be involved in at least one other burglary,” Betts said. “We’re still investigating.”
Burns’ arrest was the third of a burglary suspect in as many days, he said.
