Colorado group seeks ballot initiative to ban late-term abortions

Anti-abortion advocates in Colorado are beginning their work to get votes in 2020. Their latest effort is to get a statewide ballot initiative next year that would ban late-term abortions.

Under the measure, abortions after 22 weeks of pregnancy would be banned; there would only be an exception for the health of the mother if a doctor determines her life is at risk.

In other cases, like rape or incest, performing an abortion after 22 weeks would be a class-3 felony. It would be similar to second-degree murder or vehicular homicide and punishable by up to a dozen years in prison.

The proposal was filed Friday by Erin Behrens and Giuliana Day.

The topic in Colorado increasingly becomes more of a debate after several states have criminalized abortions just in the last few months.
