Colorado Springs drivers react to month of red light cameras
Red light cameras have been active in Colorado Springs for about a month, but have they been a success?
The two activated cameras have been installed at the intersections of Chelton and Platte, along with Briargate Blvd. and Lexington Drive. Colorado Springs police say the intent is to protect drivers and try and cut down on nasty crashes in intersections.
We spoke with drivers about the new cameras to see if, and how, they have adapted to them.
Jerry Hutchison said, “I think they are good for people that obey traffic lights, and the ones that don’t deserve to get what they get.”
Brady McKinnon added, “I think people are going to learn the hard way, but they are going to learn.”
However, some people still think they are a waste of money.
Linda Jones said, “When you have to do undercover — I call it undercover — when you have to do the red light cameras, then you’re not trusting people do as they should.”
As for that grace period given by Springs Police, drivers have one week left before it ends. And after the May 9 deadline, no more warnings will be given out.
Mckinnon said, “I think a month is plenty of time and if they haven’t learned, then they should learn how to learn faster.”
And this is only the beginning when it comes to new red light cameras. Cameras at North Carefree Circle and Academy, and Dublin and Academy will all go live sometime this spring.
