Denver to decide whether psychedelic mushrooms should be decriminalized in May
Denver will decide whether or not they want to decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms within city limits coming up in May.
According to our media partners at Denver7, the news comes after the Denver Elections Division conducted a petition from the proponents of the measure on Friday. That petition gained enough signatures for the declaration to be considered in May’s municipal election regarding the mushrooms.
Joe Szuszwalak of the Denver Elections Division told Denver7, “The Denver Psilocybin Mushroom Decriminalization Initiative submitted a sufficient number of valid signatures and the question will be placed on the May 7, 2019 Municipal Election ballot.”
In a statement, Szuszwalak said more than 5,500 signatures in the total of 8,524 that were submitted. were valid.
If passed, the measure would not legalize the hallucinogenic drug for consumption, but rather, would make its possession a low-enforcement priority for police. It would also prohibit the Denver City and County from spending resources on imposing criminal penalties on those 21 years of age and older in possession of the drug.
