Is it legal to drive with a dog on your lap?

With the holidays upon on us, many people will be taking their pets on the road with them.

A question some drivers have wondered is, “is it legal to drive with your dog or pet on your lap?”

And the answer, for the most part, is yes, it is legal. However, not in every state.

In the State of Colorado, it is legal for you to drive with a dog your lap and there are currently no laws prohibiting animals be harnessed in the vehicle.

According to Parade, Hawaii is the one state that explicitly forbids you from driving with a dog in your lap.

Denver 7’s Jayson Luber reports that though driving with a dog on your lap is legal, law enforcement can still pull a driver over for having a pet on their lap under the ‘Careless driving statute.’

Overall, if you bring your pooch on the road, use caution and if it becomes distracting, put them in the back.
