Strong storms to come – 08/16/18

Tonight: We’re tracking scattered showers and storms across southern Colorado this evening. There could even be a few lingering showers overnight. While these storms could be an inconvenience to outdoor plans, the rain is certainly beneficial. The severe threat is low; primarily, we’ll be tracking some gusty winds and pockets of moderate-to-heavy rain with isolated cases of small hail. We’ll have to watch area burn scars. Overnight we’ll have partly cloudy skies with lows in the 50s and 60s.

Tomorrow: Partly sunny skies are on tap for southern Colorado Friday. Tomorrow, there’s a very small chance for some strong-to-severe storms, where the most powerful storms could produce gusts to 1″ in diameter and gusts to 60 mph. However, this will be the exception rather than the rule. Mainly, we’ll be dealing with pockets of heavy rain, small hail and gusts to 40-50 mph. Pack the umbrella! Highs will range in the 80s for the lower elevations with the 70s for the local mountains.

Extended: The day with the best potential for severe weather in our seven day forecast is Saturday. The eastern plains will receive the brunt of the activity, but there certainly could be a few cases of large hail and damaging gusts along and west of the I-25 corridor. Similar to what we’ve done recently, we’ll have to monitor area burn scars for any threats of flash flooding. Highs the next several days stay just below-average. Sunday will offer a break from the storms (but it could be breezy!), and thunderstorms return to the area beginning next work week.
