Pikes Peak National Cemetery dedicated; construction on schedule

After two decades in the making, the Pikes Peak region has a peaceful resting site for those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

The Pikes Peak National Cemetery is officially dedicated. It means that Southern Colorado survivors will no longer have to go all the way to Denver to get their veteran’s the military burial they deserve. The new 374-acre site is on Drennan Rd. in Colorado Springs.

“It’s just an honor to have a place that we can come and show our last respects,” said Bob Aholt, who lost both his parents who served in the army in WWII.

The dedication ceremony put on by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration drew in crowds of veterans, ex POW’s, and Gold Star families.

“It’s one way to show that everyone remembers the soldiers,” said William Lewis.

Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Randy Reeves talked about this great honor the cemetery will bring to the American citizens who served and sacrificed in defense of our nation.

The new national cemetery will serve the burial needs of the 95,000 veterans in the area for the next century.

The VA is expected to complete as early as October 2018 an early turnover portion of the property along Drennan Road which will accommodate the casketed and cremated remains of Veterans, their spouses and eligible dependents.
