Inmate shot while attempting to escape in Logan County

An inmate was shot Wednesday afternoon while he attempted to escape custody from the Logan County Justice Center.

According to a release by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate is back in custody and is recovering. He hasn’t been identified yet.

Details of the escape attempt weren’t given, but the sheriff’s office said it happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday. The sheriff’s office said staffers with the Colorado Department of Corrections shot at him, and the inmate was the only one injured.

The courtrooms and courts were closed for the day after the shooting.

The shooting is being looked at by the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, who is working with the sheriff’s office, the Sterling Police Department and the DoC’s Office of the Inspector General.
