Water rescue in Colorado Springs caught on video

A downpour on Tuesday made for some scary moments for two people in Colorado Springs who had to be rescued from Sand Creek.

It’s the first rescue of the season, and firefighters can be seen on cell phone video helping two people who were stuck in the creek near Airport Road and Murray Avenue.

The man and woman, who are in their early 20s, were trying to get across the street during the height of the storm.

Curt Crumb was one of the first responders at the scene who geared up for the rescue.

“We quickly built and deployed a net, that we built from ropes, across the river,” he says.

The couple was essentially stuck with nothing keeping them from being swept away.

“They were standing on a rock that had six to seven inches of water running over it,” Crumb said.

The first rescue crew used a fire truck ladder to get them to safety. It’s part of the training firefighters get. In fact, Lt. Jason Leach said the crews had just practiced in the Arkansas River hours before the call came in.

“Once these crews were back in service, they were able to respond and use the skills they had just practiced to perform an effective rescue,” Lt. Leach said.

He warned that water is more dangerous than it looks and said this time of year, storms can pop up without much warning.
