The family of a man gunned down in his Colorado Springs auto shop is outraged by accusations made by the murder suspects’ attorneys Friday morning.
The attorneys for Derrick Davis and Eric Grant claimed during an evidentiary hearing that George Maldonado Sr. was killed because he sold the prescription drug Percocet. But family members and prosecutors claim he was targeted because of the cash he kept in a safe.
During the hearing, prosecutors presented the surveillance video of the two men dressed in utility worker uniforms. Police released the footage to the media shortly after the July murder when they were looking for the killers.

Much of Friday’s evidence hearing was spent watching the video, presenting other key evidence from the crime scene, and how police were able to track down the suspects. Prosecutors said a Google Maps photo led to the vehicle and address of one of the suspects. Davis was arrested four days after the killing in Bloomington, Minnesota. Grant was captured in October and arrested in Philadelphia.
Maldonado left behind a wife, three sons and a daughter, and two grandsons, ages two and six. He also had a granddaughter on the way. He had owned Full Throttle Auto Service for 15 years, opening it to professionalize his long-time hobby of racing cars.
