Travel troubles for El Paso County drivers
On Sunday morning, El Paso County residents woke up to white covered roads.
A man enjoying the snow at The Promenade Shops at Briargate says, “Colorado was the last to get it.” He continues, “Now it’s here. We love it.”
While it was welcomed, it caused some delays for travelers. Along I-25, near Monument, tracks were only seen where vehicles had previously driven through.
Colorado Department of Transportation’s maintenance supervisor, Brad Bauer says crews started treating the streets at 2 p.m. Saturday and started plowing later that evening.
On Sunday morning, Bauer says at least 25 trucks were on the streets across the county. “This is really the first time we’ve had plowable snow and it’s unusual,” but Bauer’s crews were excited to get working. He says, “That’s our bread and butter. We wanted to keep (Highway) 24 moving and we want to keep I-25 going.”
Crews originally started dropping a salt brine on the road, but quickly switched over to Magnesium Chloride, Bauer says, “it gets underneath the ice and basically melts it from underneath the ice.”
