Monsoon rains could fuel fungi

Mushroom hunters are hoping for good, monsoon-related moisture this summer. So far, mushroom season hasn’t been as active as it was last year.

Heavy rains last spring fueled fungi across the Pikes Peak region. This spring, there weren’t as many rain-producing storms. That’s why the Pikes Peak Mycological Society is hopeful for monsoon-related rains.

The group is also on the hunt for new species.

“Now, there’s a lot to be discovered and explored. There’s a lot new species being found here especially in Colorado,” said Pikes Peak Mycological Society member LeRad Nilles.

If a pet eats any mushrooms and vomits or experiences abdominal pain, take the pet to the veterinarian immediately.
