Changes made at Colorado Springs high school after fight
The superintendent of Harrison District 2 sent a letter to parents explaining changes that will be made following a large fight broke out at Sierra High School.
Police said 21 students were detained in connection to the fight that happened on Oct. 28.
In the letter to parents, District 2 Superintendent Dr. Andre Spencer explained the following changes:
There will be two (2) full-time School Resource Officers at the school. There will be one (1) additional School Resource Officer at the school for the next week. This officer will transition from the campus during the week of Nov. 2nd.
There will be three (3) security officers at the school. There will be a district officer at the school. There will be an adjustment to the lunch periods for freshmen students. Approximately one half of the freshmen class will have a separate lunch period beginning the week of Nov. 9th. Beginning Jan. 5th, all freshmen will have a separate lunch period for freshmen only. This will reduce the number of students in the cafeteria at all times.
There will be additional time allotted for the school social worker to work with students at the school. We will continue to monitor situations and determine if additional time is needed for the school psychologist. The student council is coordinating a student-driven behavior management system, which will be implemented school wide. All parents of suspended students (including the student) must attend a Restorative Justice Re-entry Session at the school prior to students returning from suspension (No Exceptions).
Spencer also tried to answer parents’ questions using a question and answer sheet.
Several parents told KRDO Newschannel 13 bullying may have played a factor in the fight.
Parents Brenda Williams and Cheryl Grimes said their two daughters were targeted in the fight. Williams and Grimes said their daughters were protecting their friend who has been bullied by another girl since middle school.
