Journey to national competition runs through Pueblo

Young drivers had a thrill on the hill in Pueblo Saturday.

The 10th annual Southern Colorado Soap Box Derby happened on Joplin Hill.

There were close to 30 participants trying to win in different categories.

Jocelyn Aragon said this was her first race and it was a rush.

“Just the adrenaline you get going off the ramps and when they let you go while using the little stirring wheel in here,” she said.

The derby’s website said the first race was in 1937 and continued on and off through 1969. The website also said the derby was resurrected in 2006 and became a yearly event.

The winners from the races will go on to the national competition in Akron, Ohio.
