UPDATE: Waldo Canyon Fire burglary suspect behind bars in Pueblo

Colorado Springs Police say a man suspected of burglarizing an evacuated home during the Waldo Canyon Fire has been arrested on unrelated charges in Pueblo.

Police say DNA evidence linked Graylon Thomas to the crime. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

The investigation that led to Thomas began on June 29, 2012 when police officers patrolling an evacuated neighborhood found a vehicle that had been stolen from a home on Raven Hills Court.

The vehicle was filled with property that was stolen from the home. Police say the house was ransacked. All of the stolen items were found in the vehicle and returned to their owners.

Police say they believe Thomas had an accomplice but that person has not yet been identified.

Neighbors said they hope the people responsible for stealing from the family are brought to justice.

“I think you pretty much have to be a dirt bag to steal someone’s property, especially when we are on evacuation,” said neighbor Jim Gustafson.

“It was already such a horrible time I can’t believe that people would do that,” said neighbor Kim Gustafson.

District Attorney Dan May had a message for looters days after the fire.

“To those who may be contemplating or thinking about burglarizing those homes, you better get prepared also. I hope you have packed your bags- we intend to evacuate you from our community and intend to do that for a very long time,” said May.

“Ihope it’s a lesson for other people who would think to do something like that,” said neighbor Pam Schultz.

Thomas is being held in the Pueblo County jail on unrelated charges.
