Accused killer running for City Council

A man convicted of being an accessory to murder is apparently running for Colorado Springs City Council.

Gary Flakes, 32, is running for district four. Flakes served 12 years in prison for the shotgun slayings of Scott Hawrysiak, 15, and Andrew Westbay, 13, on Valentines Day in 1997.

The teens were shot to death while walking down the street. Flakes confessed to driving up to the boys and letting his friend, Jeron Grant, get out to shoot them.

Neither was convicted of first degree murder. Instead, a jury convicted them of the lesser charge of accessory to murder.

Flakes spent 12 years in prison. He has spoken out in recent years about how he’s turned his life around.

According to his Facebook page, Flakes will be making his candidacy announcement at Sand Creek Library Wednesday at 6 p.m.
