Senior’s scooter stolen

An elderly, disabled Colorado Springs woman is concerned about her lack of mobility after a scooter she depends on was stolen.

Glenda Luoma, 63, said the scooter was locked in the trunk of her car but the doors were unlocked and the thief pulled the trunk latch to take the device. She said the thief may have known she kept the scooter in the trunk.

“Going to the doctor, the dentist or the store will be harder now,” she said. “I’ll need someone with me to help me.”

The theft happened overnight Sunday at the Canterbury Mobile Home Park near Powers Boulevard and Astrozon Boulevard on the city’s southeast side.

Luoma said she paid $1,200 for the scooter two years ago because a nerve condition, diabetes and a previous traffic accident have limited her mobility.

“Why would you take a handicapped person’s (scooter)?” she asked. “That is one of the lowest things that you can do. It’s no good to them. I’d give anything if they’d just drop it off in the yard. It’s just sheer meanness.”

Luoma’s friend, Bobby Lesmerises, said neighbors are worried because there have been other vehicle burglaries in the area this summer.

“I’d seen how much that scooter meant to her,” said Lesmerises. “It gave her some of her independence back.”

Both women said they hadn’t been locking their vehicles but will start doing so now.

Police had no details about the case as of late Monday.
