A New York man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the fatal beating of a 61-year-old Chinese immigrant. Jarrod Powell pleaded guilty in January to manslaughter as a hate crime in the 2021 death of Yao Pan Ma. Ma was attacked from behind in East Harlem on April 23, 2021. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and died eight months later without ever regaining consciousness. The assault was part of a wave of crimes targeting people and Asian and Pacific Islander descent in New York and around the country. Powell did not speak at his sentencing. His lawyer declined to comment.
